How the levels work here

There is no AAA row because no rated Alabama team uses a AAA label. The A tier splits in our data. A1 and A2 teams play at 10U through 14U, and A2 sits below A1. AA is the top of the state's ladder. Both Huntsville travel banners field most of their teams there. Alabama Thunder also ices a 13U AA team. That is an odd-year band between the 12U and 14U divisions the rest of the ladder uses.

  • Neither Alabama club publishes a full travel season fee.
  • NAHA posts a $250 non-refundable commitment fee for Chargers players selected at tryouts and says it is deducted from a total season fee the page never states.
  • The Alabama Thunder page follows the same pattern: USA Hockey registration first, then a non-refundable commitment fee, then the season fee in full or in three installments, with no dollar figure attached anywhere.
  • The Birmingham Jr. Bulls site lists no fees at all.
  • An Alabama family therefore cannot price a travel season until tryouts are over and the commitment fee is already spent.
  • Budget the USA Hockey registration separately, because both NAHA travel programs treat it as its own step ahead of the club fee rather than as part of it.

Savings tips

  • Both NAHA travel programs spread the season fee: the Chargers offer four installments and the Alabama Thunder three.
  • In both cases the commitment fee is deducted from the season total rather than added to it, so do not budget it twice.
  • NAHA also lists Try Hockey for Free and Learn to Skate / Learn to Play sessions among its programs, which come ahead of any travel commitment.
  • Kids Play Alabama awards grants covering registration fees and related expenses such as uniforms and shoes, for children in grades K through 12 in any organized sport, and accepts applications on a seasonal basis only, so apply in the window before your season starts.

Alabama plays under the Southern Amateur Hockey Association (SAHA). SAHA is the USA Hockey affiliate that also covers Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. It sits inside USA Hockey's Southeastern District alongside CAHA, PVAHA and Statewide Amateur Hockey of Florida. Almost all of the state's organized hockey runs through two clubs. The North Alabama Hockey Association (NAHA) in Huntsville says it has over 800 players, from age 4 to over 84. It runs a youth house league, an all-star program, a high school league and learn-to-skate sessions, plus two travel banners. Its Alabama Thunder teams play 12U, 13U, 14U and 16U, all at AA, in the Southeastern Showcase League. Its Chargers teams play 10U, 12U, 14U and 16U at A or AA. In Pelham, the Birmingham Jr. Bulls run the competitive travel program for the Birmingham market. They play 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U and 16U out of the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena.
