How the levels work here

Hockey PEI's own league list is Rec, A (tiered, male and female), AA and AAA. So the House row here is the Rec league under a different name, and PEI minor hockey has no B or C tier. A is the working tier for most of the province. It splits geographically at U13 and U15 into A East and A West. AA and AAA are iced by designated clubs rather than by every association. So a AAA player registers with a club like Mid-Isle Matrix instead of with a hometown association. Mount Academy's CSSHL prep route is priced separately, as Accredited School.

  • AA and AAA are not run by your home association, so the bill for those tiers comes from a separate club: Mid-Isle Matrix is the AAA program for the North River, Kensington, North Star and South Side associations, and those associations ice their AA teams through North River and Gulf Storm.
  • PEI's two U18 Major clubs, the Charlottetown Island Coastal Knights and the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild, play in a league whose other members are in Fredericton, Moncton, Saint John and northern New Brunswick, so the U18 Major schedule is built around off-island road trips.
  • The prep route is priced outside minor hockey entirely: Mount Academy in North Rustico published 2024-25 program totals of CAD $18,750 for its grades 7-9 middle school hockey program, CAD $22,750 for the grades 10-12 skills program and CAD $45,000 for the grades 10-12 hockey program, with a further CAD $7,500 international student fee and CAD $5,000 for ESL instruction.

Savings tips

  • Canadian Tire Jumpstart individual child grants cover eligible registration and equipment costs of up to CAD $300 per year, per child, for ages 4 to 18 in families that meet Revenue Canada's low-income cut-offs.
  • The application asks for proof of financial need, and the document Jumpstart names is a current Canada Child Benefit statement.
  • Jumpstart funds programs that run at least five weeks with at least one session per week.
  • Hockey PEI runs A and Rec as one league with tiered A divisions, so a player who does not make AA or AAA still has a graded local league to play in.
  • If your association feeds Mid-Isle Matrix, ask what the AAA club charges before tryouts, because that fee is set by the club and not by your home association.

Hockey in Prince Edward Island

Your child's team will be Rec, A, AA or AAA. That is the ladder parents see here, and it sets most of the cost, so find your row in the table above. Rec is the House row. A is the tier most of the province plays in. At U13 and U15 it splits by geography into A East and A West. There are 25 rated A teams at U13 and 20 at U15, against seven AA and four AAA teams at U13. The table is our estimate of a full season.

Hockey PEI is the sole Hockey Canada member branch for Prince Edward Island. Its own league list names a "PEI 'A' & 'Rec' Hockey League", separate male and female "A" tiered leagues, and PEI "AA" and "AAA" leagues. Clubs in our data include the Greater Charlottetown Islanders, Pownal Red Devils, Kings County Kings (Montague) and Mid-Isle Matrix (Cornwall). There are also the North River Flames (Cornwall), Gulf Storm (North Rustico), Kensington Vipers and Souris Sea Hawks. The Montague Norsemen, O'Leary Maroons and Alberton Regals round out the list. Hockey PEI was formed in 1975 and was renamed from the Prince Edward Island Hockey Association in 2006. It reports a membership of approximately 8,000 players, coaches and officials. They sit across five councils: Minor Hockey, Female Hockey, Junior/Senior, Development and Officiating.
